Just for Fun #4: Riddle Me This…

Every Wednesday we have our Just for Fun feature which brings you an interesting distraction to help you get through your midweek blues. Join us this week for a feature on classic riddles!

Hi everyone!

It’s Wednesday again, and this week we present you with… classic riddles! The beauty of riddles as a puzzle type lies in the fact that the answers – usually everyday words or objects – are obscured with clever plays on words, abstract ideas, or human characteristics. An especially good classic-styled riddle can leave you marvelling at how something as simple and mundane as an egg, for example, can sound so mysterious and elusive when it’s described as a golden treasure trapped in a lidless box.

So without further ado, we present ten classic riddles for your puzzling pleasure!

  1. Who makes it, has no need of it.
Who buys it, has no use for it.
Who uses it can neither see nor feel it.

Feeling confused yet? Here’s a doozy.

And for a little something extra… a famous riddle posed by the Mad Hatter in Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, which is notorious for being an unsolved riddle. Except for the fact that there is a solution, also penned by Lewis Carroll himself! Be warned, though: his reasoning is a bit unexpected and makes a couple of crazy plays on words (and makes an intentional spelling error)!

Bonus Riddle: Why is a raven like a writing desk?
