Just for Fun #5: Feat. Extra Credits!

As a designer, you don’t know who’s going to end up playing the games you craft. You need to consider your entire audience when designing!

You never really know who’s going to end up in your game as a designer. Is it going to be Jim, the guy who loves the thrill of competition? Or maybe, it’s going to be Amy, who really loves to sit down with a well-made logical puzzle. Maybe it’ll be Ophelia, who just really likes to coordinate a team effort and enjoys being that central hub of information. Maybe it’ll be a group of just Jims!

Maybe you're the "wrangler" on your team.
Maybe you’re the “wrangler” on your team.

The truth is, you can’t really know for certain, so you have to design your game to appeal to a wide variety of audiences. Rooms should have a mix of things for everyone of all tastes to enjoy – a blank room filled with differential equations would probably not go over well, and nor would a giant playpen of plastic balls with random answers written on a random scattered few. You’re looking to strike a balance, and today we’re featuring Extra Credits to help illustrate our point: well designed escape rooms are an amazing experience because they can appeal to so many different people and tastes.

Extra Credits is a video series that illustrates game design concepts in an easy and fun video format. They cover a variety of topics from individual mechanic examinations to issues the game design industry faces as a whole as games evolve and mature.

So, sit back and relax – if you’ve never watched an EC video before, you’re in for treat! For more illuminating videos on the topic of game design, check out their YouTube channel!
