Sawdust and Blinky Lights

It’s full out construction mode here at SideQuests HQ. We’ve got tablesaws whirring, test boards blinking, paintbrushes swishing, and all sorts of curious things being built!

Constructing an escape room is a curious task. You’ve got an idea of what you want a particular gadget or doodad to do, but now comes the interesting part – you have to make it. There’s no “off the shelf” solution most of the time for this sort of thing. It’s not like you can just hit up your local Canadian Tire for a “build your own secret passage triggered by a pressure plate” kit. It’s also really quite an interesting phone conversation when you call up a vendor and you try to explain what you want their product to do…

So, you end up planning, building, testing, building, testing, scrapping, testing, and building (sometimes, but not necessarily in that order) many, many  things to get the seemingly simple goal of a secret door triggered by a person standing on a pressure plate holding a magical broom. But not just any magical broom – it has to be the one from that particular corner so then it’s back to the drawing board…

Today, we’re going to share with you some behind the scenes photo and video bits from our latest construction and gadgetry adventures. Don’t worry, there are no spoilers here. Unless you’re a combination of Nicolas Cage from National Treasure crossed with Sherlock Holmes, you’re probably not going to figure out exactly what our puzzles and the solutions to said puzzles are just from this teaser.

Enjoy!
